Edwards, Higgs, Wilder, Wyldar (Wilder)
1. John1 Wyldar (Wilder) (#3189) was born before 1471.
A deed, copied on paper and filed with a collection of deeds of the Queen's Remembrancer's Department of the Exchequer, records a grant by
Robert Lenham, esquire, heir of Thomas Rotherwell, in the time of Henry VII. Robert Lenham died in 1491, so the
grant must have been made during the preceding six years. He made a grant "to Alexander Holowey, John Clerk, John
Blithe, John Pestowe, and John Wyldar, of the manor of Thedemersh with the advowson of the parish church of the same;
with further grant of all his other lands and tenements &c. in Thedemersh, Pangbourn, Sulham, Tilehurste, and Ufton Robarte."
William Berry's Encyclopedia Heraldica, Complete Dictionary of Heraldry, Volume II, describes the arms of
Wilder, and notes that they were granted to John Wilder of Nunhide, Berkshire. For these arms to have been granted to this John, and
descended to later generations of Wilders, it must be inferred that Nicholas Wilder was this John's son. However, the author believes that
the arms would more likely have been granted in the 17th century to the first John Wilder to bear the appellation of gentleman.
Various sources describe the arms and crest of Wilder as "gules from a fess or, charged with two barrulets azure a demi lion, rampant,
issuant, of the second. Crest, a savage's head, affrontee, couped at the shoulders, the temples entwined with woodbines, all proper."
In plain English, that would be a red shield with a horizontal gold stripe in the middle, the stripe having a smaller blue
stripe adjacent above and below. Above the upper blue stripe, in the top red portion, there is a side view of the front half of a lion, as
if standing on it's hind legs and waving its paws.
John Wyldar (Wilder) had the following child:
2. Nicholas2 Wilder (John1 Wyldar (Wilder)) (#2445) was born in maybe, Berkshire, England probably before 1485.
Nicholas died after March 1542 in probably, Berkshire, England.
He married Elizabeth (Isabell) (Wilder).(1) (Elizabeth (Isabell) (Wilder) is #2449.) Elizabeth was born in maybe, Berkshire, England.
Elizabeth's estate was probated in 1544 in Archdeacon Court, Berkshire, England.(2) Elizabeth (Isabell) (Wilder) wrote her will July 9, 1544 in Sulham, Oxfordshire,
England.(3) The 1544 will of Elizabeth Wilder lists such a
remarkably similar set of sons that she must be considered to have been the same as Isabell, widow of Nicholas. She named her son John, the
elder, to be supervisor of her will. It was he who had responsibility that masses should be said for the health of her soul. The next sons
she mentioned were Henry and Thomas Wilder, who were not named in her husband's will. Next she made bequests to John Wilder, the younger,
and to William Wilder, and gave two sheep to John and Thomas Wilder, sons of John Wilder, the elder, as named in her husbands will. She
added 20 pounds 13 shillings fourpence for Elizabeth Wilder, whose relationship she did not mention, to be paid by John, the elder. Finally,
she named sons Richard and Nicholas Wilder to be executors, and to have the residue of her estate.
She made a will July 9, 1544 in Sulham, Oxfordshire, England.(4)
Nicholas Wilder wrote his will March 31, 1542 in Sulham, Oxfordshire, England.(5) He made bequests to John his elder son, John his younger son, and to his other sons Richard, Nycholas, and
Wyllyam. To each of them he left money, twenty sheep, and a cow. To Wyllyam and Nycholas he left the lease of his farm at Chynham to have
and occupy in partnership.
He referred throughout his will to his wife, Isabell, whom he named his executrix. In this era, the
names Isabell and Elizabeth were used interchangeably.

be his executor.
John's estate was probated after July 19, 1550 in Archdeacon Court, Berkshire, England.(23)
Although the name in his 1550 will is written as "John Wild, it seems
most likely that he was one of the Wilders of Sulham. His will was brief and lacked detail, mentioning no property by name, and referring to
every one of his children. He named his wife Agnes to be his executor.

He married Alice (Wilder) in maybe, Sulham, Berkshire, England. (Alice (Wilder) is #1233.)
Alice was born in maybe, Berkshire, England. Alice died in 1598 in probably, Nunhide, Sulham, Berkshire, England,
at 68 years of age.(36) In John Wilder's will written October
14, 1588 in Sulham, Oxfordshire, England, Alice was named as his wife and executrix.(37) Alice was bequeathed life income from Nunhide Farm in the will of her husband
John written October 14, 1588 in Sulham, Oxfordshire, England.(38) Alice (Wilder) wrote her will January 2, 1597/8 in Nunhide, Sulham, Berkshire,
England.(39) Alice's estate was probated August 23, 1602
in Archdeacon Court, Berkshire, England.
Rev. Moses Wilder asserted that she was "Alice Keats, daughter
and heiress of Thomas Keats, Esq., of the Sulham House." Neither Burke's nor any twentieth century Wilder descendant supports this
contention.
In Elizabeth (Isabell) (Wilder)'s will written July 9, 1544 in Sulham, Oxfordshire, England, John was named as her
grandchild.(40) Rev. Wilder wrote that in 1582, he gave by deed of
entail the Sulham House to his third son, William.

England.(42)
Rev. Wilder wrote that
in 1582, he gave by deed of entail the Sulham House to his third son, William.
The birth dates of his children may be estimated
from the order they are named in his will, relative to the known date for Nicholas.
John Wilder and Alice (Wilder) had the following children:
-
19

John5 Wilder (#3911) was born in Nunhide, Sulham, Berkshire, England.
John died after January 2, 1597/8 at approximately 52 years of age. In John Wilder's will written October 14, 1588 in Sulham,
Oxfordshire, England, John was named as his eldest son.(43) In Alice (Wilder)'s will written January 2, 1597/8 in Nunhide, Sulham, Berkshire, England,
John was named as her son.(44)
There are indications that this John may have married and had a son named John. The 1588 will of John Wilder refers to "John my sonnes
sonne", and makes a bequest of twelve marks to his son John, of which half is to be employed for John.
Since it seems that he
was in favor with his parents, it must be presumed that, as the eldest son, he must have come into possession of one of his father's choice
leases. Perhaps he inherited use of the Sulham farm. The descent of his line is not known.
