1. Wesley1 White (#122) was born in probably, Tennessee circa 1773.
Wesley died in maybe, Bartholomew Co, or Jennings Co, IN.
He married twice. He married Elizabeth (White). (Elizabeth (White) is #123.) Elizabeth died after
1840 in perhaps, Decatur Co, IN. As the wife's age in the 1840 census matches the earlier records, it is presumed that Elizabeth
lived beyond that year.
He married Nancy (White) before 1850 in perhaps, Decatur Co, IN.(1) (Nancy (White) is #2799.) Nancy was born circa 1786 in probably, Tennessee.
Nancy died after 1850 in maybe, Bartholomew Co, IN. As her age in 1850 was a decade less than Wesley's wife in the 1840
census, it is presumed that this marriage took place sometime in the mid-1840s.
His daughter Dorcas, in the 1850 census, gave her birthplace as Tennessee. If Wesley was there in 1792, he could have been with the Wesley
White who was one of the first settlers of Jefferson County, TN, in 1783. All of the census records indicate that the Wesley of this article
must have been too young to be the one named as the settler.
Madison County, KY court order books record on March 3, 1794, that a Wesley White bought land from James Belcher. On Dec 1, 1795, that land
was sold to Moses Baker. Significantly, no wife of Wesley White was mentioned at this sale, which would have been after the birth of Dorcas
and Melinda.
According to the Pulaski Co. KY tax lists, in 1800 he had 100 acres on Pitmans Creek; 1801-2 100 acres on Buck Creek; 1803 no land. Court
orders V.2 p.34B July 1804, entitled him to 100 acres "he has improved and is living on, lying in a part of the Sinking Valley." In Feb
1806 in V.2 p.159, he relinquished this grant, and he was taxed with no land.
From 1807 to 1822, he was taxed on 114 acres on Buck Creek entered and surveyed by William Burnham, originally patented by "W. White",
which might be William White who was earlier on Buck Creek.
In the 1810 Census, Wesley was listed as a head of household in Pulaski Co, KY.(2) He was age 26-44. In his household was a woman 45+, another 26-44, a young woman 16-25 (presumably his
daughter Melinda), two girls 10-15, and two boys and four girls under age 10.
He may have been associated with George White who also was listed in the 1810 Census in Pulaski Co, KY.(3) George and his wife were 45+, with a young man 16-25, a boy and two girls
10-15, and a boy and a girl under age 10.
From 1813 to 1821, the next name on the tax roll is John Waddle, without land.
In the Census, Wesley was listed as a head of household in Pulaski Co, KY.(4) He and his wife were age 45+, with a boy 15-19, a boy and a girl 10-14, a boy and two girls 5-9, and a boy
and two girls under age 5. Three of the girls in the 1810 census had left home.
Wesley's last appearance on the Pulaski County tax rolls in 1821 shows him without land, listed next to John Waddle, who had 50 acres on
Buck Creek entered and surveyed for Price.
Harding's History of Decatur Co. IN describes the establishment of the first Methodist organization near Greensburg in 1822, "soon
afterward" joined by Rev. Wesley White and wife Elizabeth.(5)
In the 1830 Census, Wesley was listed as a head of household in Decatur Co, IN.(6) Wesley and his wife were in their 50s, with a young man in his 20s, a young woman 15-19, and a boy and a
girl 10-14.
In the 1840 Census, Wesley was listed as a head of household engaged in manufacture or trade in Clifty Twp, Bartholomew Co,
IN.(7) He and his wife were in their 60s.
29 Aug 1850 in the Census of 1850, Wesley was listed as a head of household with real estate of $300 in Rock Creek Twp, Bartholomew
Co, IN.(8) According to that census, he was working as a
bell smith. The author hasn't discovered whether any of the bells made by Wesley White still ring in the churches of Indiana.
This man, named for the founder of Methodism, who himself became a Methodist minister, must have come from a family
closely associated with the church. There are a number of references to several men of the same name in mid-eighteenth century Virginia;
this man could well have been a Junior of one of them.
That the Indiana and Kentucky Wesley White's are the same is supported
by his age, residence in Bartholomew Co., and the 1844 marriage of Ann Wadell to Woodson Long by Rev. Wesley White.
Wesley White and Elizabeth (White) had the following children:
-

iii.
Silas White(9) (#2804) was born in probably, Pulaski
Co, KY circa 1802. Silas died 1875 at 73 years of age. His remains were interred in Bartholomew Co, IN.(10) He married Elizabeth Peter August 28,
1831 in Decatur Co, IN.(11) (Elizabeth Peter is #2805.)
Elizabeth was born circa 1816 in Kentucky.

v.
Otha White (#2802) was born in Pulaski Co, KY circa 1805. His relationship is entirely speculative, based on
presence in Decatur Co. IN near Wesley. He married Mrs. Otha (White). (Mrs. Otha (White) is #2803.)
Otha was born circa 1805.
Harding's History of Decatur Co. IN lists him among 1821 settlers of Washington Township.(12)
In the 1830 Census, Otha was listed as a head of household in Decatur Co, IN.(13) He and his wife were in their 20s, with a girl 10-14, a boy 5-9, and three boys and a girl under age 5.
2. Dorcas2 White (Wesley1)(14) (#61) was born in
Tennessee circa 1792. Dorcas died in probably, Indiana.
She married John Waddle November 1, 1809 in Pulaski Co, KY. (John Waddle is #60.) John was
born circa 1791 in Madison Co, KY.(15) John(16) was the son of Henry Waddle and Jane Welch. John
died in probably, Indiana.
The 1830 census showed a John Waddle in Ripley County, Indiana. The household included a woman age 30-39, another 20-29, two boys and a
girl 15-19, two girls 10-14, a girl 5-9, and two boys and a girl under age 5. One must speculate that the head of the house was away from
home. The boys match exactly; the two girls 10-14 and the one 20-24 are not known.
On June 18, 1835, John and Dorcas deeded
twelve acres of land near Big Graham Creek in Ripley County to John Walton for eighty four dollars.
In January of 1857, some of
John Waddle's grandchildren fell afoul of the law. On the first day of the January term of the Bartholomew County Circuit Court, John
Waddle, Allen Henton, Edward Waddle, Benjamin Brown, Samuel Ely, and Wesley Howard were brought before the court, charged with riot. Charges
against John, Allen, and Benjamin were dismissed; charges against the other three were continued to the next session. On the third day of
the court term, the District Attorney was charged with accepting a bribe for the earlier dismissal. On the tenth day of the session, the
dismissed charges were reinstated, and bail of $100 was set until the next term. Subsequent records of the case have not been located. The
only known Edward Waddle was the son of Wesley; he had a brother named John. Benjamin Brown was likely the son of Elizabeth Waddle. He was
in Christian County, in the southern part of Indiana, in the 1860 census.
No further record of John Sr. nor Dorcas has been
discovered - no clue about how long they lived, or where they died and were buried.
Dorcas White and John Waddle had the following children:
-

iv.
David Waddle(17) (#2806) was born in maybe,
Pulaski Co, KY circa 1815. He married Catherine Farmer August 15, 1839 in Bartholomew Co,
IN.(18) (Catherine Farmer is #2807.) Catherine was born
circa 1815. His parents are speculated based on his residence in Bartholomew County in 1840, and marriage performed by Wesley White.

She married John Herron 17 Nov 1811 in Pulaski Co, KY.(21) (John Herron is #9268.) John was born about 1790 in Duplin Co, NC.(22) In the 1830 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Decatur Co,
IN.(23) He was listed as a neighbor of Wesley
White in the 1830 Census in Decatur Co, IN.(24) Wesley and his
wife were in their 50s, with a young man in his 20s, a young woman 15-19, and a boy and a girl 10-14.
In the 1830 Census he was listed near Greenup Herron in Decatur Co, IN.(25) In the 1840 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Haw Creek Twp, Bartholomew Co,

She married Jacob Howard Nov 17, 1840 in Bartholomew Co, IN. (Jacob Howard is #2548.) Jacob
was born circa 1821 in Kentucky. (Additional notes for Jacob Howard(85)) Information about Jane and her family has been provided by researcher Mike Ockenfels. Although no
direct evidence links this Jane Waddle to John and Dorcas, the circumstantial evidence is strong. Her birth in 1817 would make her the
second daughter of John and Dorcas, who would be expected to be named after John's mother. The 1820 census includes 2 daughters under age 5
who have not otherwise been identified. Jane had a daughter who may be presumed to have been named after Jane's mother. And Jane is said to
have had a brother named Ben.

age.(97) She was a brave pioneer woman who raised her family by her
own efforts after the early death of her husband. She is probably the source of the family rumor that the Waddles or the Butners were
Quakers, but if she were one, she must have come to that faith late in her life, after her son William married a Quaker woman. None of her
other children were married in the Society of Friends.

Arrowood.
Sterling died 1943 in Bartholomew Co, IN, at 96 years of age. A family tradition says he drove a commissary wagon in the Civil
War, and that six of his brothers also served in the war. The records of two of them, and of a brother in law, have been identified, on the

14. The relationship of Dorcas White, wife of James Waddle, to Wesley White has not been confirmed by
any document. Circumstantial speculation is based on the fact that Wesley is listed next to John Waddle in Pulaski Co. tax lists and census,
and that Wesley White presided at the marriage of Sally Waddle and William Waddle in 1813, but not at the marriage of Dorcas White and John
Waddle (see Pulaski Co. Marriage Records 1798-1851 compiled by Mary Weddle Kaurish and the Pulaski Co. Historical Soc.) It is
significant that John Waddle named his second son Wesley.
