The first appearance of this man that has been found in public records is on the tax rolls of Madison County, Kentucky, where his name is listed twice, in Books 2 and 3, each entry dated April 18 and showing one man over 21 with one horse. The tax rolls exist for the prior years of 1787 and 1788, and do not show him to have been there. If that might indicate he was under 21, he would have to have been born as late as 1767.

In 1797, he was in Garrard County. On February 15, 1798, he had filed a claim for head rights to 100 acres of land on Pitman Creek in what was then Lincoln County, later Pulaski County, Kentucky, where he would spent the remainder of his life.

His daughter Sarah married William Waddle, son of Peter Waddle of Virginia. Their descendants believe that the two Waddle families were very distantly related, if at all. Her record, or Henry Jr.'s, in the 1880 census will, when found, reveal what they told the census taker about their parents' birthplaces.

2. John² Waddle (Henry¹)⁽¹⁹⁾ was born in Madison Co, KY circa 1791.⁽²⁰⁾ John died date unknown in probably, Indiana, at age unknown.

He married Dorcas White November 1, 1809 in Pulaski Co, KY. Dorcas was born circa 1792 in Tennessee. Dorcas was the daughter of Wesley White and Elizabeth (White). Dorcas died date unknown in probably, Indiana, at age unknown. The 1830 census showed a John Waddle in Ripley County, Indiana. The household included a woman age 30-39, another 20-29, two boys and a girl 15-19, two girls 10-14, a girl 5-9, and two boys and a girl under age 5. One must speculate that the head of the house was away from home. The boys match exactly; the two girls 10-14 and the one 20-24 are not known.

On June 18, 1835, John and Dorcas deeded twelve acres of land near Big Graham Creek in Ripley County to John Walton for eighty four dollars.

In January of 1857, some of John Waddle's grandchildren fell afoul of the law. On the first day of the January term of the Bartholomew County Circuit Court, John Waddle, Allen Henton, Edward Waddle, Benjamin Brown, Samuel Ely, and Wesley Howard were brought before the court, charged with riot. Charges against John, Allen, and Benjamin were dismissed; charges against the other three were continued to the next session. On the third day of the court term, the District Attorney was charged with accepting a bribe for the earlier dismissal. On the tenth day of the session, the dismissed charges were reinstated, and bail of $100 was set until the next term. Subsequent records of the case have not been located. The only known Edward Waddle was the son of Wesley; he had a brother named John. Benjamin Brown was likely the son of Elizabeth Waddle. He was in Christian County, in the southern part of Indiana, in the 1860 census.

No further record of John Sr. nor Dorcas has been discovered - no clue about how long they lived, or where they died and were buried.

She married William Waddle August 22, 1813 in Pulaski Co, KY.(28) William was born December 26, 1793 in Washington Co, VA. William⁽²⁹⁾ was the son of Peter Waddle and Malinda (Waddle). William died June 16, 1864 in Pulaski Co, KY, at age 70.

The 1880 census found her living in the household of her late daughter Sarah's widower, Cyrenius Collier. Regretably, she listed her parents' birthplaces as Kentucky, which hadn't yet come into existence at the time of their births.

The 1820 census includes 2 daughters under age 5 who have not otherwise been identified. Jane had a daughter who may be presumed to have been named after Jane's mother. And Jane is said to have had a brother named Ben.

Sarilda died November 26, 1903 at age 76.⁽⁸⁹⁾ She was a brave pioneer woman who raised her family by her own efforts after the early death of her husband. She is probably the source of the family rumor that the Waddles or the Butners were Quakers, but if she were one, she must have come to that faith late in her life, after her son William married a Quaker woman. None of her other children were married in the Society of Friends.
