1. John¹ O'Neal (#52) was born in Virginia circa 1765.⁽¹⁾ John died circa 1844 in Bartholomew Co, IN, at age unknown.

Court records of Washington County, Virginia, for March 1781 show the appointment of Ezekiel Abel as the guardian of John O'Neil. John was to be bound until he would be of age, which under law would be on January 1, 1786. Ezekiel Abel was to give him one years schooling and "learn him the Smith Trade." Washington County, Virginia was just across the border, in the same valley as Hawkins County, Tennessee.⁽²⁾

In 1820 the census of Washington Co. VA shows two names that appear in John's grandsons: Hugh Oneal (001101 - 01301) and Charles Oneal (0001 - 101). Neither appears in the 1830 Virginia census, nor in Tennessee.

In the 1830 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Hawkins Co, TN.⁽³⁾ He was in his 60s, with a wife in her 50s, a young man in his 20s, another young man and two young women 15-19, a boy 10-14, and a boy 5-9. The ages of the boys match ages in 1850 census, except for Bartlett who is shown born 1810 or later. Daughters are not known; one could be James's wife Sarah Helton. The Hawkins County connection is further supported by the association in Bartholomew County between John's children and the family of John Helton of Hawkins County, presumed to be the brother of the wife of John's son James.

In the 1840 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽⁴⁾ He was in his 70s, with a woman in her 50s, a young man and woman in their 20s, and a boy 15-19. They resided near James O'Neal. The ages of the young men match son George W. age 35 in 1850 census and Charles age 27. The young woman 20-29 is not known; could be the first wife of G.W. The woman age 50-59 was not found with any known child in 1850. No burial record was found in the Bartholomew Conty Historical Society's published cemetery records.

In 1842 and 1843 John was taxed on 40 acres in Section 7, T.8, R.7 in Rock Creek Twp, Bartholomew Co, IN. This land was taxed to Charles O'Neal in 1845. No record of his burial was found in the Bartholomew Co. Historical Society's published cemetery records.

John O'Neal may be presumed to be the parent or guardian of the four O'Neals of Bartholomew County because of his nearby residence there in 1840, 1842, and 1843. The land for which he was taxed in 1842-3 was taxed to Charles in 1845.

John O'Neal had the following children:

2. James² O'Neal (John¹) (#26) was born in Virginia 1805.⁽⁵⁾ James died May 1880 in Bartholomew Co, IN, at age 74.⁽⁶⁾ His remains were interred at the Christian Church Cemetery in Burnsville, Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽⁷⁾

He married Sarah (Sally) Helton around 1832 in maybe, Hawkins Co, TN. (Sarah (Sally) Helton is #27.) Sarah was born circa 1807 in Tennessee.⁽⁸⁾ Sarah⁽⁹⁾ was the daughter of Marvel Helton and Agnes (Helton). Sarah died March 18, 1896 in Bartholomew Co, IN, at age 88. Her remains were interred in Schilo Ch. Cem, Burnsville, Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽¹⁰⁾ In 1880 Sarah was listed in the 1880 Census as a head of household in Rock Creek Twp, Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽¹¹⁾ Her maiden name was mentioned in an article about her son Bartley in 1879 in a local atlas of the county. Supporting evidence for her origin is given by the close association of her family with that of James Helton, probably her brother, who came from Hawkins County, Tennessee to Bartholomew County in the 1860s.

In her later years, she was a member of the Schilo, or Shiloh, Baptist Church near Burnsville. Rev. Albert Carter presided at her funeral.

In the 1840 Census, James was listed as a head of household engaged in agriculture in Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽¹²⁾ He and his wife were in their 30s, with a girl 5-9 and two boys under age 5. They resided near J. O'Neal.

In the Census of 1850, James was listed as a farmer and head of household with real estate of $1100 in Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽¹³⁾ In the Census of 1860, James was listed as a farmer and head of household with real estate of $6000 in Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽¹⁴⁾ James O'Neal wrote his will 21 Feb 1870 in Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽¹⁵⁾ He left all of his property to his wife Sally for her life; thereafter, three quarter-quarter sections of land were to go to his youngest son Anday, and half of a quarter section was to go to each of his daughters Milley Marcum and Nancy Ann Roach, and another half quarter section was to be shared among his grandchildren Isaac, James, Sarah Jane, and Elizabeth Rogers. After his widow's death, his personal property was to be sold and divided among all of his children, after one bedding and bedstead and two hundred dollars went to his granddaughter Elizabeth Rogers. His son William O'Neal was to be executor. Witnesses were Jesse S. Rogers and Nancy Richardson.

In the Census of 1870, James was listed as a farmer and head of household with real estate of $5500 in Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽¹⁶⁾ James's estate was probated 24 May 1880 in Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽¹⁷⁾

In the 1840 Census, Bartlett was listed as a head of household in Jennings Co, IN.⁽¹⁸⁾ He was in his 20s, and his wife was 15-19. Two persons were engaged in agriculture and one was engaged in manufacture or trade.

10. Amelia (Milley) M.³ O'Neal (James², John¹) (#13) was born in Bartholomew Co, IN circa 1844. Amelia died circa 1874 in probably, Bartholomew Co, IN, at age unknown. She must have died shortly after the birth of her fourth child, Luella.

She married John Marcum April 28, 1864 in Bartholomew Co, IN. (John Marcum is #12.) John was born April 11, 1836 in Covington, Campbell Co, KY. John was the son of Arthur Marcum and Nancy Robertson. John died December 5, 1912 in Beaver Crossing, Seward Co, NE, at age 76. On July 6, 1861, he enlisted at Leon, in Decatur County, Iowa, into Company D of the 4th Regiment of the Iowa Volunteer Infantry. They were mustered into federal service at Council Bluffs, Iowa, Aug. 15, 1861, and proceeded from there to Rolla, Missouri where they were absorbed into the Army of the Southwest under General Curtis.⁽⁷²⁾

He was wounded in the ear while fighting in the battle of March 7 and 8, 1862, called Elkhorn Tavern by the Confederates, at Pea Ridge, Arkansas, where the Union victory was important in saving Missouri for the Northern cause. His wound was attested in the 1883 pension application by John R. Muir, who had been a neighbor in Bartholomew Co. and served as a corporal in Co. G of the 22nd Indiana Volunteers. Other comrades-in-arms mentioned in his pension papers were James Campbell, Israel Milligan, Lt. James Finley, and Capt. Howard Brown.

His military service was marked by an interruption, during which he returned home to Bartholomew County and married. John maintained that on Feb. 13, 1863, he had been captured by Confederates near Napoleon, Arkansas, on the Mississippi River. They paroled him, after he promised to go home and fight no more. The Union army was unaware of this event, however, and carried him as a deserter, absent without leave, between Jan. 17, 1863 and July 13, 1864.

He rejoined his company then, in northwestern Georgia, as General Sherman was preparing to advance toward Atlanta.

During the campaign for Atlanta, General Sherman was overall commander of three Union armies. The 4th Iowa was assigned to the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Division of the 15th Army Corps, in the Army of the Tennessee.

General Sherman led his army from Atlanta to the coast in two great columns, sixty miles apart, with the Army of the Tennessee on the right. After Savannah had been presented to President Lincoln by Sherman for Christmas, 1864, the armies proceeded into South Carolina. It was the 15th Corps that occupied the state capital, Columbia, whose burning was blamed on the Union forces.

John was mustered out with his company at Louisville, Kentucky, on July 24, 1865, with an honorable discharge.

In the Census of 1870, John was listed as a farmer and head of household with personal estate of $200 in Rock Creek Twp, Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽⁷³⁾ In 1880 John was listed in the 1880 Census as a head of household working on a farm in Rock Creek Twp, Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽⁷⁴⁾ His 1890 pension application, No. 469831, applied for in Greene County, MO, when John and his family were living nearby in Fair Grove, said that he had lived in Indiana for 18 years after the war, and then moved to Cherryvale, KS, for three years. That was probably between 1883 and 1886. He finally was granted a pension, Certificate No. 718752, and was receiving $15 a month in 1912.

Her given name may come as something of a surprise to those who only knew her as Lessie, but the 1880 census of her father's family shows her named "Malessa." Lessie was the daughter of Sterling Tucker Barrett and Martisha Ann Waddle.

Lessie died July 19, 1965 in Friend, Saline Co, NE, at age 90.

13 June 1900 W. S. was listed in the 1900 Census as a head of household working as a farm laborer in Seward Co, NE.⁽¹⁶²⁾ 25 April 1910 W. S. was listed in the 1910 Census as a head of household renting a farm in Beaver Crossing, Seward Co, NE.⁽¹⁶³⁾ His son Sherman, in an autobigraphical sketch, described W. S. as "a strong 190 lb., six foot father." He related that they moved to Foraker, Oklahoma in January, 1913, and back to Nebraska in May. While farming a few miles west of the town of Friend, the family acquired its first automobile - a red Buick with no top. Bessie recalled that her mother used to dress in full driving regalia - a smart cap, tied on with a scarf, and a full duster coat. W.S. never learned to drive - Loyd was the chauffeur.

After the world war, the family moved to Colorado. A letter from his mother-in-law, Martisha Barrett, Feb. 11, 1923, said he was living in Haxtun, Colorado. After five years in Colorado, the family returned to Nebraska, and shortly thereafter moved to Carthage, Missouri, which Sherman said "was my dad's birthplace." From the middle of the 1930s, he spent the remainder of his life in Friend, Nebraska.
