Markham
1. Thomas1 Markham of Henrico Co. VA(1) (#257) was born in England probably before 1611. Thomas died probably before 26 Sept 1678 at
approximately 67 years of age.
He married Susan Greenleafe. (Susan Greenleafe is #5808.)
The date of his arrival in Virginia is unknown. He might be the naughty boy, Thomas Markham who was
transported from London in 1621. He certainly was not Miss Thomazin Markcom who departed Gravesend 24
July 1635, as has been written by some authors.(2)
It appears that on 20 Nov 1635 Thomas Markham was first granted a patent for 300 acres of land on the James River at Four Mile Creek,
adjoining Bayly's land. 50 acres came to Thomas for his personal adventure, and 100 acres for the transport of two servants, John Fouke and
Rich. Whitfield. 150 acres were granted in right of his wife Susan Greenleafe, relict of Robert, being 50 acres for her personal adventure
and 100 acres for Robert Greenleafe her former husband being an original planter.(3)
Patent Book 1, Part I, page 314 records the patent in the name of Thomas Warren. It seems evident that the name must have been misread when
the grant was trancribed from the original record into Patent Book 1 by Clerk Edward Harrison in 1683 - quite possible as the names
"Warren" and "Markham" are of similar length and amplitude.
Page 371 of Patent Book 1 records another grant in Henrico
County, identical in every particular, with wife relict of Robert Greenleafe and transportees John Foker and Richard Wall, in the name of
Thomas Markham 11 July 1636, renewed, it says, by Sir John Harvey.(4)
Patent Book 1, page 436 records the patent again, identical in all details, with a date of 11 July 1637.(5)
16 Dec 1652 Thomas was in possession of the same land, which adjoined a grant made on that date to John Greenhough.(6)
All of the credit for tying this line together, from this
immigrant, Thomas Markham, down to Arthur Markham, the Revolutionary War soldier who settled with his family in Georgia, goes to Mr. William
H. Marcum. He and his wife, Fonda Gilbert Waters Marcum, spent many years researching his line, and presented their material in their 1982
book, The Way it Was with our Ancestors. He includes a summary of the legendary and famous members of the family in England. The
individuals in this American family are fleshed out with far more information and background than will be given on this page.
The present author has reproduced the descent with the intent of recording the events and locations of the family members. As a family which
produced a number of sons named Arthur, the present author views it as a potential source of some undiscovered brother who took off for
Kentucky.
Thomas Markham of Henrico Co. VA and Susan Greenleafe had the following child:
2. Thomas2 Markham Jr. (Thomas1) (#5809) was born in Virginia after 1635.
He probably assumed possession of his father's land when Joseph Greenhough renewed the grant to a Thomas Markham 26 Sept 1678.(7)

was born probably before 1722.
24 April 1732 Thomas Markham of Goochland Co, VA sold to Joseph Mayo of Henrico for 5 pounds 286 acres in Henrico County, at the head of
White Oak Swamp, bounded as by patent to John and Joseph Pleasants. This is probably the same land that was acquired by Arthur Markham from
Joseph Pleasants.(15)
21 Nov 1740 Thomas Markham of Amelia County bought 100 acres on the north side of Haw Branch in Amelia Co, VA from Daniel Hamlin.(16)

61. The present author is the only one who has ventured to combine his two known names of John and
Jonathan as John Nathan. The author has based this idea on the probability that his middle name matches his son's name, Nathaniel, and that
the census taker who recorded him as "Jonathan" made a natural mistake when his informant spoke "John Nathan" quickly with the local
accent.
